Abstract

This study concerns a horseman's stele discovered accidentally in the region of M'fatha, wilaya of Médéa. Bearing a funerary character, the originality of this stele is evident through its architecture and the iconographic themes it displays. Examination of this sculptural work reveals a main theme: a horseman armed with a lance, depicted in bas-relief. At the base of the stele, the sculptor line-engraved an image of a lion in a lying position. The representation of the horseman, with a frontal face and torso under a triangular pediment reminiscent of temple architecture, suggests the celebration of a person of high social standing, riding a fairly harnessed mount. The association of the feline image with the horseman may equally convey the authority and strength of the horseman, as well as his exploits in the field of hunting.
