dc.description.abstract This paper gives a psychoanalytic examination of Kopano Matlwa=s novel Coconut. The analysis, which draws on Freudian psychoanalytic theories, investigates the complex dynamics of human psyche and the impact of personal and social experiences on finding the individual=s identity. This dissertation deals with the topic of identity and belonging and delves into the interplay between the conscious and unconscious impulses of the characters= novel by analyzing their psychological conflicts. The protagonists go on a journey of identity-search, facing belonging issues and repressed identity, and also deal with their cultural placement and delve into their defense mechanisms. en_US
